My Thoughts on Android's Fast Charging Systems – October 2020

Android Fast Charge Technology

Over the last couple of Years, Smartphones like those running on the Android Operating Systems (OS) have been coming up with various Fast Charging Systems, and I just wanted to write about my personal experiences with them.

Before Fast Charging Tech
Before these Fast Chargers started coming up as regular features on Android units, it usually took a long time to charge Smartphone Batteries, as much as 4-5 hours on some Smartphones that I owned.

For example, my old Sony Xperia T2 Ultra back in 2015 took around 4-5 hours to fully charge its 3,000 Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) 3,000 mAh Battery from 0 or close to 0 to 100% depending on whether the unit is on .

My older Cherry Mobile S320 Titan TV back in 2013 was even worst, taking around 5 hours with the unit on to charge its 2,500 mAh Li-Ion Battery. The fastest charging unit I had before these Fast Charging Technology came up was with my Samsung Galaxy E7 back in 2016 which took only 2 hours and 15 minutes to charge its 2,950 mAh Li-Ion Battery.

Fast Charging Tech
My first experience with Fast Chargers was with the 20W Voltage Open Loop Multi-step Constant-Current Charging (VOOC) on my Oppo F9 back in 2018 which only took around 1 hour and 30 minutes to charge its 3,000 mAh Lithium-Polymer (Li-Po) battery from 0 to 100% with the unit turned off which I thought was absolutely fantastic.

When I changed to the Huawei P30 Lite in 2019, I was a bit disappointed because its 18W Fast Charge System took longer at around 2 hours to charge its 3,340 mAh Li-Po Battery from near 0% to 100% with the unit on.

Right now my Phone is the Realme 6 which I bought recently, and it uses the 30W Flash Charge 4.0 VOOC technology which charges its Battery from 2% to 100% in only 1 hour and 15 minutes.

What I find more impressive is the fact that it has a higher capacity Battery than the F9 or P30 Lite with its 4,300 mAh capacity Li-Po Battery.

What I love about this fast charging system is that I go over and charge the Phone, do something, and more often than not when I finish and come back to the Phone, it is already fully charged.

The Future
Higher end Phones now have even faster 65W Fast Charging technology which I expect to trickle down to lower end Phones by next Year (2021). My expectation is that it will be able to fully charge phones from near 0% to 100% with the unit on in around 45 minutes.

Even faster 125W Chargers are already available now on high end Smartphones that enable charging within just 15-20 minutes, I expect these to trickle down to lower end Phones in a couple of Years.

I think that within 5 Years, we will be able to see the Charging Technology that can complete Phone Charging to within just 5 minutes.
