Here are what I think are the at least watchable to Best Series and Movies that I watched on Netflix for the Month of June 2024:
* Godzilla Minus One (2023) Movie Review – Great, I was excited when this was finally shown on Netflix because of all the Rave Reviews it got when it was first released in the Movie Theaters last Year, and it does live up to all that Hype. This was “Shadowdropped” on Netflix, meaning just shown without any prior Announcements. Although this is supposed to be Monster Movie, it really more about the People who ended up fighting it, and everything about it was Excellent: The Storytelling, the Character Development, etc. Even the Special Effects was outstanding, with the Monster Scenes really giving a lot of Thrills and sense of Dread.
The Twists are also outstanding and very compelling. The Movie is set just after World War Two (WW2) in Japan where just as the Country was recovering from a devastating War, they now also have to deal with a Mysterious Creature that has started to terrorize their Country. A Must-See for me, and what a way for Netflix to start off the Month of June 2024.
* Her (2013) Movie Review – Great, this Movie has been around for awhile, but it was only now that I got to watch it on Netflix, and it does live up to all the Hype about it. It has an All-Star Cast with Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johanssen, Amy Adams and Olivia Wilde, but of course it is Joaquin and Scarlet who gets to be in most of the Movie.
I like the Pacing and the Fact that there is always interesting happening onscreen. I also like the clean, modern and almost Antiseptic looking City that served as the Background for many of the Scenes. Truly hearwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. The Movie is mainly a “Romcom (Romance-Comedy)”, and is about a Man who fell in love with a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Application on his Device, and is set in the near Future. A Must-Watch, it deserves all of the Praises and Hype it has received so far.
* Sweet Tooth (2024) Season Three Series (Final Season) – Good, Season One was pretty good, Season Two was a letdown, but good to see Season Three, the Final Season, recover and get back some of its lost Glory. This Season worked because I think it was more of an Adventure as the Main Character ended up with more “Side Quests” on his travels compared to the previous Season.
There is a slow spot in the Middle though, and the source of the Virus that afflicted the World turned out to be sort of underwhelming for me. But I did like the Positive Ending of the Series. The Series is set in an Apocalyptic near Future where Humans are dying of a mysterious Virus and all Children are being born as Human-Animal Hybrids, and it focuses mainly on a half-Deer, half-Human Character named Gus.
* Madame Web (2024) Movie – Very good, I finally saw this on Netflix, I wasn’t expecting much from it after all the negative Reviews I read online about it, but I ended having one of the biggest surprises for me in recent times when it comes to Movies. It’s just that not only was it good, it was very good. Not great but certainly much better than what some People were saying about it.
The Pacing was fast, it had nice Twists, and Madame Web’s Superpower gave the Movie a lot of “Edge of Tomorrow” vibes to it. I also liked how they sort of reversed the Tropes and had the Spiderman be the Villain here instead of the Hero as he had been in all the other Spiderman Movies. Dakota Johnson also has a lot of Charisma, enabling her to be a very effectively carry the Movie on her own.
The Movie is an effective Action-Thriller set in contemporary times, and is about the origin of Madame Web whose Powers allow her to predict the immediate Future, and who ended up trying to protect three future Spiderwomen against a Super Villain.
As to why this Movie was Review Bombed, I think because for one, the Misogynists hated it for having an All Female Lead. Then the Conservatives probably didn’t like the Woke-casting of having the three to-be Spiderwomen being of diverse Races, I mean one was White, the other a Latina and of course the Black Community was represented by a Black Woman.
Lastly, there are some Powers-that-be in Hollywood which had been envious of the successes of the Superhero Genre this Past Decade or so and is seeking to break that stranglehold in the Industry, hence the Review Bombings of the latest several Superhero Movies.
For me this also goes to show how corrupt and biased the Professional Movie Critics are now in Hollywood, just serving the Interests of whatever Lobby or Public Relations (PR) Groups that may be out there. Anyway, just ignore all the negativities that are out there and enjoy watching a pretty entertaining Movie of its own.
* Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) Movie – Very Good, with some slow Spots at times, definitely not renowned Director Quentin Tarantino’s best Work but still pretty good enough to watch. Set in the late 1960s, it’s Light Comedy-Drama about the Life of a Hollywood Actor known for his Roles on Western Series and Movies at the waning Point of his Career, with lots of interesting Hollywood Trivia along the Way. With an All Star Cast consisting of Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Dakota Fanning, Austin Butler, etc.
* Ultraman: Rising (2024) Movie – Very Good, I thought this would be too “Kidsy”, and it is at times especially when it came to the Baby Monster, but the Multi-level Storytelling and Character Development are good enough for the Adults to be able to appreciate also, making this Movie one that the entire Family can watch.
It is a Three-Dimensional (3D) Animated Action-Drama set in an alternate near Future about a new, young Superhero who turns into a Giant in a Space Suit to fight Giant Monsters called “Kaijus”, and how his Life got upended when he was forced to take care of a Baby Kaiju. Visually the World-building is outstanding, but a bit Dark, sort of like a “Batman”-type of a World.
The Animation Style reminds me a lot of like the ones they used in the “Spiderverse” Movies, right down to the sometimes Psychedelic Colorings. The Action Scenes are a bit far apart, but are Outstanding when they finally do happen. The Movie also has a lot of Heart, really getting into that Theme about Family.
The only Thing I didn’t like about it was the Ending which was a bit forced to be a Happy one after they hinted at what was supposed to be a Sacrifice by Ultraman. There is an End Credits Scene that promises a possible Sequel to the Movie.
* Trigger Warning (2024) Movie – Good, the Action Scenes were pretty good, I like the “John Wick”-type of Martial Arts, and as expected, the former “Dark Angel” Action Series Star Jessica Alba did well in them. There are some slow spots in the Middle, though, and I thought it could’ve used some tighter editing to make it a shorter but more intense Film.
It is an Action-Thriller set in Contemporary times in the United States (US), it is about a Special Forces Operative who had to go back to her Hometown upon her Father’s Death, and ultimately got dragged into a complex Criminal Conspiracy.
* The Accidental Twins (2024) Documentary Movie – Good, as with most Documentaries I have seen on Netflix, this was compelling enough to watch. It is Documentary Movie about two Sets of Male Twins, one of each Set was switched to the other just after Birth in the South American Country of Colombia, and only found out about the switch Decades later when they had all already grown up. There were some nice Contrasts about the Economic and Social Backgrounds of both Sets of Twins, which just served to make Things more interesting. Good though that everything turned out well in the End.
* A Family Affair (2024) Movie – Very good, it really hits the “Rom” (Romance) and “Com” (Comedy) Parts of its Genre really well. The Script is funny and witty all throughout, and the Actors really have a good feel of what their Characters should be. The Cinematography is noticeably amazing, everything just looked sparklingly clear and the Colors popped out. The Upper Middle class looking Sets also was a nice Background for the Scenes.
The Movie is set in contemporary times and is about a famous Actor with an Attitude Problem who got together with the Mother of his young and long suffering Personal Assistant (PA). With an All-Star Cast which includes Nicole Kidman, Zach Effron, Kathy Bates and newcomer Joey King.
