Here are what I think are the at least watchable to Best Series and Movies that I watched on Netflix for the Month of September 2024:
* Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef (2024) Sports Event – Outstanding, this is a Showdown between two Legends of the Sport of Hotdog Competitive Eating, namely Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi to settle once and for all who is the “Greatest” at their Sport. That is the Main Event, but they had two interesting Side Events as well, like a Competitive Eater versus three Olympic Medalists in a Chicken Wing eating Showdown, and a World Record setting for the most Watermelon to be eaten in (I think) four minutes. Very entertaining to watch, a great Way to start off the Month of September 2024, and with some pretty good and funny Hosts.
* Untold: Hope Solo vs. U.S. Soccer (2024) Documentary Movie – Outstanding, the last of three releases of the “Untold” Sports Controversy Series for this Third Quarter of 2024. This is about the Biography of a Hall of Fame Goalkeeper of the United States (US) Women’s National Soccer Team Hope Solo and the Controversies that she was involved in, particularly with the US Soccer Federation (USSF). She had great, exceptional Talent, but also had a rather “colorful” Life. As always, the “Untold” Series on Netflix is one of their very best Documentary Series, it is always a very interesting Watch.
* Rebel Ridge (2024) Movie – Good enough to watch, this is about a Soldier who got involved with some Racist and Corrupt Cops in a small Town. It is mainly a Thriller, there are some Action Scenes but they are few and far in between. As a Thriller it is pretty decent, but nothing extraordinary, good enough to while a couple of Hours away when nothing better is available.
* Apollo 13: Survival (2024) Documentary Movie – Outstanding, this about the Apollo 13 Mission where an Accident happened while it was on its way to the Moon which nearly led to the loss of the Spacecraft. I had already see Tom Hanks’ Movie about this back in the 1990s, and it was a pretty memorable Film so I wasn’t sure if this Documentary Movie would offer anything worthwhile to watch, but it did. It did so by having the People themselves that were involved narrate the Incident as it happened, like the Commander of the Mission Jim Lovell, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Flight Director Gene Krantz, etc. Some of the Narration though may have been simulated only based on what they said before during Written Interviews, like Lovell’s Wife Marilyn to died last Year of 2023.
* Uglies (2024) Movie – Good enough to watch, this is a Science Fiction (Sci-Fi) Thriller whose Plot revolves around a young Girl who needed to undergo into a Surgical Procedure to fit in as an Adult in a Dystopian Future, but finds out some unsettling Truths about it and the Society that she lives in. It’s sort of like mix of Classic Sci-Fi Movies like “Logan’s Run”, “Gattaca”, “The Hunger Games”, etc. The Pacing is good, and it is interesting enough to watch, but some Parts of it are somewhat predictable and derived. I did like the Ending though, which could be a hint for a Sequel, but good enough also to stand on its own as it is.
* Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter (2024) Limited Documentary Series – Outstanding, this is a really interesting Missing-Mystery-Murder Case because it had several Twists and Turns. Its about a Mother who gave up her Baby when she was a Teenager, and the Child grew up but went on missing for several Decades. And that is just for Starters, there are other interesting Twists around the Case that came out as it developed. Another great Documentary from Netflix, a Must-Watch for me.
* Emily in Paris (2024) Season Four Part One – Outstanding, another great Season for what I call is a “Lifestyle and Work Fantasy” Series about an American with her can-do Attitude ended up finding success and love in Paris. This is one of Netflix’s “Gems”, one of its Series with the highest Number of Viewership. This second Part to me looks like they were just wrapping up Things up in France move to another City and Country, Rome in Italy. I can’t help but notice the sharp Contrast between the two Cities and Countries, the Environment and Weather just seemed a lot more sunny in Italy than in France. It remains to be seen if they will change the Title of the Show to “Emily in Rome” next Season as Emily herself did sort tease that a bit at the last Episode.
* Ellen Degeneres: For Your Approval (2024) Stand Up Comedy Special – Outstanding, a lot of negative Things have been said about Ellen Degeneres lately, but one Thing is undeniable, and that is she has Great Comedic Talent. She has excellent Timing, exceptional Stage Presence and I have always found her Comedy Material to be among the funniest ones on Netflix. This Special is somewhat Bittersweet though as she says it is her last Comedy Special, one that allows her to leave the Entertainment Industry under her own Terms as she tackles the latest Controversies she has had head on. A Must-Watch for me.
* Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story (2024) Limited Series – Outstanding, an almost Masterpiece of Storytelling, “almost” because there are some slow Spots, they probably experimented too much with this like that one Episode where it was just Erik and his Lawyer talking for around 45 minutes. But still most Parts of the Series is excellent, the many Episodes allowed the Creators to explore much of the Facts and Opinions about the Case.
I think the Creators themselves were not sure of the Brother’s Guilt or Innocence, hence they just presented as much Details as they could about the Case and let the Audience decide for themselves what really happened. Some Parts also felt like that of in a Roller Coaster ride as it would pull you one Way, then pull you again the other Way as the Story progressed.
I also liked the Fact that despite the very serious Nature of the Case, the Series Creators were still able to find some Space for Humor. The Soundtrack was also outstanding, most of it featuring the Songs by the Group “Milli Vanilli”. For those not familiar the Brothers, they were from a rich Family that was accused of unaliving their own Parents back in the 1990s, and it caused quite a Sensation back then.
